I teach guitar lessons! With students from age 6 to 80, I've found that every student offers a different combination of challenges and inspiration. From students taking their first music lesson to musicians looking to improve their understanding of improvisation and composition, I've helped hundreds of guitarists along their musical journey.

My teaching philosophy

I belive that the most important thing a student gains from music lessons is self-confidence. In a world where education is increasingly legislated and the media tries to tell us what to like and what to believe, music lessons offer an invaluable opportunity for self-discovery and expression. Learning to play an instrument is a unique and private journey that enables us to better understand music and ourselves. To help students progress, I teach them:

• an understanding of music theory - From the basics of learning the notes to advanced chord theory, an understanding of the way music works helps make learning easy and fun!
• basic guitar skills - Guitar is a unique instrument, with it's own techniques and idiosyncracies. By learning to play songs from recordings performed by guitarists, students learn the language of guitar, from open chords to rock soloing, that make it different than any other instrument.
• popular songs from recordings - Most students develop their interest in music by listening to guitarists on their favorite albums. Learning to play the music they listen to is an important reward for any musician, and from a very early stage I work with students to learn songs from recordings they bring in.
• a flexible lesson plan- There are lots of different kinds of guitar students, and I've taught them all! Working with a student to develop a lesson plan that helps them learn in their own way and at their own pace is crucial to making learning music a fun and confidence building experience. Whether they enjoy working through method books or just want to learn their favorite songs from the radio, I help students learn the music that they love while building their musical foundation.
